New Oshawa School Officially Named Northern Dancer Public School

Students, Parents and Guardians Are Thrilled To Open a New School

School board members have selected Northern Dancer Public School as the school name for the new north Oshawa school, to reflect the roots of the community.

Northern Dancer was a Canadian-bred thoroughbred racehorse that won the 1964 Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes and then became one of the most successful sires of the 20th century. He is considered a Canadian icon, and was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1965. Induction into the Racing Hall of Fame in both Canada and the United States followed in 1976.

Northern Dancer retired in 1965 at Windfields Farm, close to the current location of Northern Dancer Public School.

Northern Dancer Public School is 62,280 square feet, two-storeys, fully-accessible and will be located at 2200 Bridle Road at the corner of Northern Dancer Drive and Bridle Road. The school will open this September 2018.

"Our growing northern Oshawa community is delighted to see the opening of Northern Dancer Public School," says Linda Stone, Trustee for Oshawa. "Our students and parents are excited to have a community school they can call their own."

Oshawa Trustee Linda Lowery agrees, "Students, parents and guardians are thrilled to open a new school in the community they can call their own. Our community voiced their opinions and helped us name our new school. Our students will benefit from the support our community, school staff, and wider Oshawa community will show to the students at Northern Dancer Public School."

Michael Barrett, Chair of the DDSB, and Oshawa Trustee is pleased to be able to complete the process of naming schools in both Ajax and Oshawa. "The Durham District School board is pleased to announce the naming of our schools in Oshawa and Ajax. The names that have been chosen were completed through a consultative process that engaged our community and reflects the leadership and history of our communities," states Barrett. "We congratulate our communities and look forward to the contributing role these schools will play within their communities."
