Special Education Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Principal

  • Ensure that an IEP is developed within 30 school days of the student's placement
  • Assigns to one teacher the primary responsibility for the student's IEP.
  • Signs the IEP indicating its appropriateness to the student, standards required.
  • Ensures that IEP is included in the student's OSR
  • Ensure that all school personnel who work with the student understand their responsibilities regarding the implementation of the IEP
  • Ensures that the parent and student, if over 16 are consulted in the development of the IEP and receive a copy of it

 Responsibilities of Classroom Teachers

  • Are aware of which students are identified within their classroom
  • Collaborate with the Special Education teacher in the development of the IEP.
  • Provide remedial support to students
  • Provide feedback or student progress for identification, programming, or placement changes
  • Are familiar with the IEP of students in their classes and modify, differentiate or accommodate the expectations of the curriculum in accordance with the IEP.
  • Plan and carry out instructional programs for the student.
  • Work with Educational Assistants and parents
  • Encourage students to use Academic Resource as needed and become self advocates

Responsibilities of Special Education Teachers/Academic Resource

  • Provide teachers with a list of students who are formally identified
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, students and other professionals in the development, implementation, and review of the IEP.
  • Ensure that IEPs and transition plans are provided within 30 school days of the student's placement
  • Encourage students to become self-advocates
  • Conduct educational assessments and observations to identify student's strengths and needs
  • Generate ideas and suggestions for programming
  • Provide updated information about students to teachers, as well as, consultation services to assist them in developing program strategies that are appropriate for the student
  • Provide a support within classrooms or in a withdrawal setting
  • Act as a liaison between students, teachers and parents
  • Assist teachers in either modifying the expectations and/or providing appropriate accommodations to meet the needs of the students. (Most students only need accommodations.)

  Responsibilities of Educational Assistants

  • Work as a team with teachers, students and parents.
  • Provide physical assistance to students
  • Photocopy notes and take notes for students
  • Draw student attention back to instructions or tasks.
  • Provide prompts to motivate students to complete work
  • Assist with behavioral management programs
  • Collaborate in the IEP process
  • Assist students under the direction of the teacher
  • Assist with appropriate modifications and/or accommodations
  • Monitor and record the student's achievements and progress, under the direction of the teacher
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the student's teacher and the Special Education teacher

  Responsibilities of the Students

  • To become familiar with their identification and information contained in the IEP.
  • Collaborate in the development of their IEP and transition plan
  • Come prepared for class
  • Complete work assigned and participates in class discussions or activities.
  • Use withdrawal support as needed
  • Monitor his/her progress toward goals
  • Explore postsecondary options and arrange for support at the postsecondary level.
  • Become a self-advocate

  Responsibilities of the Parents

  • Encourage children to complete their work to the best of their ability
  • Advocate for their child's best interests
  • Reinforce and extend the educational efforts of the teacher
  • Provide consent for up-to-date medical information or any relevant assessments to the school
  • Provide important information about their child's likes, dislikes, learning styles, interests, and reactions to situations, and about the talents and skills their child demonstrates in the home and community
  • Collaborate with others in the development of the IEP, and transition plan.
  • Share important information with the in-school team (Academic Resource, Special Education teachers, Educational Assistants, classroom teachers, consultants and administrators) to help make decisions about educational interventions to help the student.
  • Attend annual reviews of placement.
