National Child Day
Nov 20, 2016
All Day
National Child Day is celebrated on November 20th each year. The date marks the occasion when Canada adopted the  United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)  , spelling out the basic human rights for children and youth.

National Child Day has been nationally celebrated since 1993 to commemorate the United Nations’ adoption of two documents centered on children’s rights: the United Nations Declaration of Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, and the United Nations  Convention on the Rights of the Childon November 20, 1989.

The overall objectives of National Child Day are to pay tribute to Canada’s commitment to children outlined in the Convention and  A Canada Fit for Children; promote children’s initiatives across the country; and encourage child-related organizations to raise awareness of child rights.
We celebrate the success the Government of Canada’s initiatives have in making a real difference in the lives of our children and families. Through initiatives such as the Universal Child Care Plan, the Child Fitness Tax Credit and improving access to health care for children, the Government of Canada continues to demonstrate its commitment to working as effectively and efficiently as possible to produce real results to support families in their efforts to ensure all children have the opportunity to grow up healthy and reach their full potential.

The Government of Canada remains committed to supporting children and their families. The Government will continue to advance policies and programs that support parents and children and take their best interests into account. This work will be undertaken directly as well as with partners, including the provinces and territories, civil society, Aboriginal communities and organizations, and international organizations. Knowledge gained through lessons learned, best practices, research and tools will guide the continuous improvement towards ensuring children have the best start in life, no matter where they live. We will continue to strengthen our efforts to ensure the well-being, healthy development, protection and participation of children and youth.

Take time on November 20th to celebrate National Child Day.
