Welcome to the School Community Council (SCC)

at Walter E. Harris PS!

The SCC is a group of parents or guardians who have an interest in what is going on at Walter E Harris. Anyone and everyone are welcome!

Some of the members on our email contact list only come out to meetings. Others cannot make meetings due to work or children's schedules but volunteer in committees or help at events. We have found that there is no greater reward than being involved with your children's education.

There are many opportunities to help with the SCC here at Walter E Harris. We have monthly meetings to help ensure the needs of the children and parents are all being met and to take an active role in the school. Meetings run approximately 1 – 1.5 hours. We discuss programs run at the school, decide where funds should be spent around the school and collaborate with the administration at the school and Board regarding programs and events.

Some members are able to help during the day with some of the school run programs like the Milk Program and Pizza Lunches. Others aid in the planning stages or at other events, which involve year round contributions such as our Grade 8 Grad. Some members help at special events like the Terry Fox Run, Fun Fair or with fundraisers like the QSP Magazine Campaign. Some jobs involve a steady, regular commitment, others only occasional hours. Any help makes lighter work for the rest of the members! Any help is welcome, but none is required.

If any of this is of interest to you, ensure you are on the SCC contact list so you can get any emails, which go to the group about upcoming meetings, events and areas needing assistance. If you would like to be added to the email list, contact us at and request to be added to the list.

Here are a few common questions and answers:

What if I just want to know more about what is going on at school?

Great! We are so pleased that you are committed to being involved in your child's education! Why not come out to our monthly SCC meetings? Everyone is welcome - no experience necessary. Our meetings are casual and welcoming. We are just a group of parents who want to be involved in what is happening in the school. Come and share your opinions. Even if you cannot make every meeting, you are welcome. If you want to be more involved, volunteer! We can always use extra hands. Nevertheless, even if you cannot make a commitment to volunteer, you are welcome to the meetings.

How is the SCC run?

The SCC has an executive consisting of 2 Co-Chairs, a Treasurer and a Secretary. These members are nominated and voted in annually by the rest of the SCC.  This group works with the administration and the SCC members to run events and make decisions at Walter E Harris. Decisions are made by the majority of member votes.

What happens at an SCC Meeting?

Normally our meetings at Walter E Harris start at 6:00pm and run until 8-8:30. You will find a group of parents with children of many different ages, people with different occupations, some are stay at home, some work endless hours! The only common theme of an SCC member is to care about your child's school! During the meeting, the Principal and Vice-Principal will report on events and things happening at the school. A teacher's rep will report on any requests from the staff. In addition, the group, led by the Co-Chairs, will go over any SCC business. The Treasurer will often provide a monthly report on the finances for the SCC. Meetings are very casual and members are encouraged to bring new ideas or questions to the meetings. Even if you cannot commit to regular meetings, still come out to what meetings you can! We would love to hear what you have to say. No experience is necessary - everyone is welcome!
