Trustee Vacancy

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) invites interested candidates to apply to fill a vacancy for the position of Trustee for a term of office ending on November 14, 2026.  

Eligibility Criteria  
  • The person must be qualified to vote and is a resident within the jurisdiction of the DDSB, provided that they are not otherwise disqualified under the terms of the Education Act.   

  • Under the terms of the Education Act, a person is disqualified if the person is: 

    • an employee of a district school board or school authority the clerk or treasurer or deputy clerk or deputy treasurer of a municipality or an upper-tier municipality, all or part of which is included in the area of jurisdiction of the DDSB;

    • a member of the Assembly or of the Senate or House of Commons of Canada; 

    • a member of any other district school board or school authority, except the Centre Jules-Léger Consortium;

    • a member of the council of a municipality or an upper-tier municipality, all or part of which is included in the area of jurisdiction of the DDSB;

    • an elected member of a local board, as defined in the Municipal Affairs Act, of a municipality or an upper-tier municipality, all or part of which is included in the area of jurisdiction of the DDSB; or  

    • otherwise disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office. 

How to Apply
  • Interested candidates are asked to submit an application no later than May 1, 2024, at 4:00 pm to trusteevacancy@ddsb.ca    

  • The application must include the following information: 

    • Confirmation of eligibility to be appointed as described above; 
    • Why the applicant is interested in the position; 
    • The applicant’s background, interests, experience, concerns; and  
    • Any other information the applicant thinks is pertinent, including any experience with the Education Act, governance or related experience.

Interview Process
  • Trustees will review applications that are submitted by the deadline and will invite all applicants that have complied with the application requirements to attend a virtual interview at a Special Board Meeting to be held virtually the week of May 6 - 10, 2024 at a date and time to be confirmed.
  • Candidates will be invited to address the Board for up to five (5) minutes, and to respond to questions from Trustees.
  • Interviews will be open to the public and livestreamed online.
Roles and Responsibilities 

Under the Education Act, the Board of Trustees is mandated to: 

  • Promote student achievement and well-being. 
  • Deliver effective and appropriate educational program.
  • Develop, maintain and monitor effectiveness of Board policies.
  • Develop, communicate and review annually a Strategic Plan.
  • Monitor the performance of the Director of Education.
  • Practice responsible stewardship of Board resources.
