Supporting Student Needs: Accommodations

Sometimes changes need to be made to the learning environment, teaching approaches, or school activities so that every student can access learning and fully take part in school. These are called accommodations. Examples may include:

  • Academic support: extra time to finish an assignment or test, IEP accommodations for learning needs, etc.
  • Religious accommodations: support for faith-based needs (dietary needs, clothing (such as head coverings), and important days/observances).
  • Accessibility: Assistive technology, seating, and space to support physical and learning needs.

To request an accommodation, discuss your child’s needs with their teacher or principal. We will work with families to address those needs.

Why Do Human Rights Matter and What is the DDSB Doing?

Human rights matter because they help every child feel welcome and supporttheir learning. At the DDSB, we are committed to:

Access

All students have fair and equitable access to learning.

Inclusion

Our schools and classrooms are places where everyone is recognized and respected for who they are.

Accountability

There is a clear, accountable process for raising and responding to concerns.

DDSB provides training for staff, listens to families, takes action to address and prevent discrimination, supports students and families who are impacted, and follows Ministry of Education standards to ensure that schools are safe and respectful places for everyone.
