Understanding Your Rights and Responsibilities
Students’ Rights—What to Expect
Students can expect their rights to be respected every day at school. This includes:
Safety: A school environment that prioritizes safety and respect.
Support: Access to accommodations if they need help with learning or participation, and help/support if your child is discriminated against.
Input: Opportunities to share ideas and concerns respectfully.
Identity: Express their identity (in ways that do not discriminate against others) and have their identity reflected in their learning.
Example: A student who reports bullying is listened to, supported, and included in decisions about how to keep them safe while their identity is respected in the classroom, and corrective action is taken to address the situation.
Everyone’s Responsibilities
Protecting human rights is a shared responsibility. We all have a responsibility to treat everyone with dignity and respect and to not discriminate against anyone.
All staff are expected to model respect, respond to concerns, and follow Ministry of Education and DDSB policies. This includes inclusive teaching, learning practices, and helping students understand the importance of human rights and responsibilities.
Students are expected to treat peers and staff with kindness and respect.
Parents/guardians and families are expected to model and encourage respectand kindness and communicate and work together with schools when issues arise.
Together, we build a safe and caring school community.
