Prohibiting Smoking and Associated Devices Policy

Positive School Climates, Mental Health & Well-Being


The Durham District School Board:

  •  supports the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 (SFOA)
  • expects that the SFOA, 2017 be enforced consistently by all Administrators
  • does not permit holding or smoking lighted tobacco/cannabis products in its buildings or on its properties or within  20 m of school property by anyone, regardless of age, will be illegal and in violation of the School Code of Conduct,  at any time. Smoking includes the carrying or holding of lighted cigars, cigarettes, pipes or any other lighted or  electronic device. Examples may include but are not limited to E-cigarettes, herbal cigarettes, chew, snuff and snus
  • does not permit supplying/selling tobacco/cannabis products to anyone under the age of 19 years in its buildings or on its properties at any time
  • expects that a School Code of Conduct outlines the expectations within the SFOA, 2017
  • School Code of Conduct should also state that associated devices, smoking equipment and electronic devices, that may contain tobacco/cannabis products, or may reasonably be perceived as containing tobacco/cannabis products, are not permitted
  • urges the delivery of research-based prevention and cessation programs to promote a tobacco free lifestyle
