Positive School Climates, Mental Health & Well-Being

1.1 The Durham District School Board is committed to providing Character Education to all students within every school and at each grade level. 

2.1 Although Character Development is the primary responsibility of parents/guardians and families, schools play an important role in developing positive Character Traits in students. 

2.2 Character Education supports academic achievement by: 

  • contributing to a safe, healthy and orderly learning environment which are pre-requisites for learning;
  • assisting in the development of the whole student, considering the cognitive, emotional, social and physical domains;
  • allowing students a voice in their learning;
  • developing students as both individual learners and engaged citizens;
  • helping foster positive learning environments that are collaborative;
  • building a sense of community within the classroom and school that is inclusive and respectful;
  • establishing high expectations for learning and promoting meaningful student engagement.
