Alternative Education Regulation

Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment


1.0 Anyone intending to initiate an Alternative Education proposal shall inform the Superintendent of 
Education/Program and Curriculum prior to developing a detailed proposal.

1.1 Alternative Education proposals shall only be considered if they involve a viable number of students.

1.2 Alternative Education proposals may be considered by the following:

    1. Administrative Council
    2. The Durham District School Board.

Note: The Durham District School Board has final approval of any proposal.

1.3 A written Alternative Education proposal should include the following:

    1. General Aims - A statement of the purpose of the program.
    2. Rationale - A concise statement of characteristics that make this an alternative program and the 
      educational need it will meet.
    3. Specific Objectives - Statements of anticipated learning outcomes.
    4. Resources - An outline of materials, textbooks, facilities, staff, transportation consideration, etc.
    5. Content - The subject matter of course of study required.
    6. Teaching Methods/Learning Strategies/Activities.
    7. Student Evaluation Procedures.
    8. Cost Estimates.
    9. Communication and Publicity.

1.4 Once an alternative program is approved, steps for implementation will be developed with 
administrative staff. Specific procedures will be detailed and a time-line produced.

1.5 Alternative Education proposals must include a time-line and procedure to evaluate the overall 
program.

1.6 An inventory of existing Alternative Education programs shall be maintained.
