2025–2026 EQAO Results – DDSB Highlights

The provincial Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released the 2025-2026 assessment results for Ontario schools. The Durham District School Board (DDSB) continues to demonstrate strong achievement in literacy across elementary grades and Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). There are continued efforts to strengthen student achievement in mathematics.

Key Highlights

  • Strong literacy achievement across the system: 85% of Grade 6 students met provincial standards in Reading and 84% in Writing, while 73% of Grade 3 students met the provincial standard in Reading and 66% in Writing. The DDSB's OSSLT success rate remained strong at 86%.

  • Improvements in several assessments: Compared with the previous year, DDSB saw improvements in Grade 3 Writing and Grade 6 Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Literacy outcomes for multilingual language learners (MLLs) also improved in Grade 6 meeting the provincial standard with 61% in Reading and 59% in Writing.

  • Students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs): Students receiving special education supports demonstrated improvements in several assessments, including Grade 3 Reading, Writing and Mathematics, and Grade 6 Reading and Writing. These results reflect positive progress, while highlighting the importance of continued efforts to support student achievement.

  • Positive trends in French Immersion: Students in French Immersion continued to achieve strong results, with particularly high levels of success in Grade 6 at 94% in Reading and Writing, and improvements across other areas.

  • Mathematics remains a key area of focus: While Grade 6 Mathematics improved slightly to 48% and Grade 9 Mathematics remained stable at 58%, mathematics achievement continues to be an area for targeted support, particularly for multilingual language learners and students with IEPs.

  • Achievement gaps remain: While many student groups experienced success, results indicate continued opportunity to strengthen outcomes for multilingual language learners and students with IEPs across several areas, particularly in mathematics.

Using the Results to Support Student Learning

EQAO results provide one of several measures that help us understand student learning and inform school and classroom planning. These results are reviewed alongside classroom assessments, educator observations, and other system data to build a comprehensive picture of student achievement and well-being.

As part of our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, DDSB continues to strengthen literacy and numeracy outcomes through:

  • evidence-based instruction and structured literacy approaches

  • targeted mathematics strategies focused on conceptual understanding and problem-solving

  • digital tools, assessments, and data-informed practices that help identify student strengths and needs

  • responsive supports and interventions for students requiring additional assistance

  • ongoing efforts to ensure every student has access to equitable, inclusive, and high-quality learning experiences

These results help guide school improvement planning, inform classroom instruction, and support our commitment to helping every student learn, grow, and succeed.
