Brooklin Village PS Students Demonstrate Leadership Through Community Food Drive
WHITBY, ON — The Brooklin Village Public School community is celebrating the remarkable efforts of its Grade 6 Leadership Team, whose dedication and compassion resulted in the collection of 1,263 food items for local food banks serving the Whitby community.
Inspired by a need identified through the school's School Community Council (SCC), the 18-member Grade 6 Leadership Team took the initiative to organize and lead a school-wide food drive. Recognizing an opportunity to support families facing food insecurity, the students embraced the challenge and worked together to make a meaningful difference in their own community.
Through their leadership and commitment, students rallied the entire school community behind the cause, resulting in an impressive donation of food items that will help support local families in need.
"Our Grade 6 Leadership Team showed what community leadership looks like in action," said Julian Segura, Grade 4/5 teacher at Brooklin Village Public School. "Through their efforts, they not only collected a significant amount of food for local families but also raised awareness about an important need within our community. We are incredibly proud of their compassion, dedication, and hard work. They have made a meaningful impact and demonstrated what student leadership can accomplish."
Students expressed pride in the role they played in supporting their community. Seeing the growing collection of donated food helped them recognize that their efforts were making a real difference and having a positive impact on the lives of others.
To help students understand the significance of their contribution, Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy visited Brooklin Village Public School to personally collect the donations and help the students load it into her truck. Through the SCC’s outreach, the students learnt about the importance of supporting local food banks and the positive impact their generosity will have on families throughout the Whitby community.
The visit provided students with a powerful opportunity to see firsthand how their actions can create positive change and strengthen the community around them.
Brooklin Village Public School is proud of its student leaders for demonstrating empathy, civic responsibility, and a commitment to helping others. Their efforts serve as an inspiring example of how young people can make a meaningful difference in their community.
