Understanding our Requirements
What are "Bona Fide" requirements? Bona fide requirements are the genuine and essential qualifications, skills, and attributes necessary to perform a job.
- We ensure that these requirements do not systemically discriminate against individuals or groups based on protected grounds.
- All job postings provide consistent information regarding the nature of the job, required qualifications, and additional assets.
- Requirements and preferred assets are consistently applied to all qualified candidates during the screening process.
Do you consider international experience?
We welcome applications from internationally trained job seekers that are currently legally eligible to work in Canada.
Occasional and Casual (Supply) Employment
What is a daily Occasional or Casual (Supply) positions?
DDSB maintains a roster of Occasional Teachers (elementary and secondary) and Casual Educational Workers (including EAs, ECEs, Custodians, and Clerical staff) who are called in to cover short-term absences on a day-to-day basis.
You'll have the opportunity to develop and broaden your skills through a variety of assignments at our elementary and secondary schools. As an Occasional or Casual (Supply) staff, you are employed directly by the board and can select temporary roles to cover employee absences for specific durations—ranging from a day to several months. Once an assignment ends, you may be offered another role, either at the same school or at a different DDSB location, depending on available opportunities.
How often do you hire for these roles?
We recruit for Occasional or Casual (Supply) positions regularly throughout the year to support our schools and departments.
Can occasional/casual employees apply for permanent roles?
Yes. Occasional or Casual (Supply) staff can view and apply for posted long-term assignments and permanent positions based on their eligibility through the appropriate collective agreements.
The Selection and interview Process
How does DDSB ensure an equitable interview?
Our selection processes are designed to mitigate bias.
- All candidates in a competition experience a consistent process, including the same interview questions and format.
- Scoring rubrics are prepared in advance to ensure fair and equitable evaluation.
- Where possible, hiring panels include individuals with the knowledge and lived experience to reflect the needs of our diverse communities.
How do I request an accommodation for the hiring process?
We are committed to an inclusive and accessible hiring process.
If you require accommodation, please email reply to your interview invitation with the request or contact us at recruitment@ddsb.ca
The Durham District School Board is committed to providing learning and working environments that centre human rights and equity and are safe, welcoming, respectful, equitable, accessible, inclusive and free from all forms of discrimination, oppression, harassment and harm.
We strive to respect the diverse backgrounds of all applicants and aim not to schedule interviews on recognized holy days or statutory holidays. When contacted for an interview, please let us know if you have specific observances so we can ensure scheduling aligns with your needs.
What are the requirements for references?
You are required to submit two (2) supervisory references with your application.
- We consider diverse types of references, including community or volunteer work, rather than strictly formal employment.
- References are only requested and contacted upon completion of a successful interview.
When will I hear back after my interview?
After your interview, we will notify you of your status as soon as possible, typically within two weeks via email.
If my interview was unsuccessful, when can I reapply?
For our daily Occasional or Casual (Supply) positions you may reapply after six (6) months for an opportunity to be reconsidered.
If you are looking to apply to other positions within DDSB there is no waiting period to apply for a new position.
