Police/School Board Protocol Procedure

Positive School Climates, Mental Health & Well-Being

The Police/School Board Protocol is intended to:

  • Support and foster positive school climates that are both safe and inclusive
  • Ensure a consistent, collaborative approach, based on common principles and expectations by the police and school staff when dealing with safety issues
  • Promote ongoing dialogue and build on effective working relationships based on cooperation and shared understandings between school staff and police

The Police/School Board Protocol is based on the following expectations:

  • Schools must be safe, inclusive and equitable places for learning and teaching
  • Providing the best possible education for students in a safe learning environment is a shared responsibility of the police and school staff that requires a commitment to collaboration, cooperation and effective communication
  • When police officers have the opportunity to engage with students in a positive, proactive manner it allows productive relationships to be built in the school community
  • The roles and relationships, procedures and decision-making authority of the school administration and police officers are clearly identified and communicated to both parties
