Kindergarten and French Immersion schools

  • French Immersion begins in Grade 1 at the Durham District School Board.  Students in Grades 1-3 spend their entire day in French. Beginning in Grade 4, French Immersion students spend half of their day in French and the other half of the day in English.  We offer French Immersion at 17 DDSB elementary and 7 secondary schools

    • Single Track French Immersion schools (Frenchman's Bay PS, Jeanne Sauvé PS, Julie Payette PS, Meadowcrest PS,  Michaëlle Jean PS,  Uxbridge PS, Walter E. Harris PS) offer Kindergarten and Early Learning programs in English only. Grades 1-8 are in French.  These schools do not have Grade 1-8 classes offered in English only.

Online Kindergarten registrations for Single Track French Immersion schools should be submitted to the French Immersion school.
Acceptance at Single Track French Immersion schools are based on first come, first served only.

    • Dual Track French Immersion schools (Cadarackque PS, Southwood Park PS, McCaskills Mills PS, Maple Ridge PS,  Sir J.A. Macdonald PS,  David Bouchard PS, R.H. Cornish PS, Brooklin Village PS, Captain Michael VandenBos PS, John Dryden PS) offer Kindergarten and Early Learning programs K-8 in English, and the French Immersion program in Grades 1-8.    Parents wanting their child to attend the French Immersion program in Grade 1 at a dual French Immersion school, your child's online Kindergarten registration should be submitted to your home school.  Please use the school locator tool to identify your home school.
  • Once space in the Kindergarten program at the French Immersion school is full, the school will forward remaining registration requests to the student’s home school.  The home school will contact parents/guardians to arrange an appointment to finalize the registration.
  • All online registrations are requests, not finalized registrations.   School administrators will set up appointments with families/caregivers in early spring to visit the school to complete the registration process; bringing the appropriate documentation to finalize their child’s registration.

Home schooling

You may also choose to home school your child instead of enrolling them in Kindergarten.
